What is a security risk assessment?
A structured judgement about what could realistically go wrong for a specific organisation, principal or site: how likely it is, what it would cost, and which treatments are worth their price. It is the step that decides what protection is warranted, before anyone is deployed.
Do we need this before engaging protection?
Not always, but it is what stops you buying either too much or too little. Protection commissioned without an assessment tends to be sized by anxiety or by budget rather than by exposure, and both are expensive in different ways.
What does crisis planning involve?
A plan written against your actual threat picture, the people named in it who will run it, and a rehearsal that establishes whether it survives contact. A plan nobody has exercised is a document, not a capability.
